“Hey local folks, who’s the best massage therapist around?”

You’ve probably seen this question in a community Facebook group, on Nextdoor, or in a
group chat. It pops up all the time.
Recently, I saw it again—and couldn’t resist scrolling through the replies.
Some lovely clients tagged me (thank you!), and I recognized names of other incredible therapists in the area—some of whom I personally see for bodywork. A few names I didn’t know, but had heard great things about.
It made me reflect on something I’ve been thinking about for a long time…
Can There Really Be a "Best" Massage Therapist?
I’ve been fortunate to receive hundreds of massages over the years—from students in training to elite-level sports therapists, from a gentle prenatal massage when I was 8 months pregnant to Thai bodywork in a beachside hut in Jamaica.
And here’s the truth:
👉 They were all good. They were all different. And many were excellent.
Could I pick one that was “the best”? Honestly… no.
I’ve won a local “Best Of” award. I’ve had new clients tell me, “My friend said you’re the best.” And while I’m honored by that praise, I also know:
"Best" is subjective. It depends entirely on what you need.
So instead of asking “Who’s the best massage therapist?”, the better question might be:
How Do You Find the Right Massage Therapist for You?
Here are 5 important things to consider when choosing a massage therapist or clinic:
1. ✅ Professionalism & Communication
Do they return your calls, messages, or emails promptly?
Do they ask about your health history and goals for the session?
Do they check in before, during, and after to ensure you're comfortable?
A great therapist builds trust through clear, respectful communication and boundaries.
2. 🎓 Training, Licensing & Experience
In most states (including Wisconsin), massage therapists must be licensed. This ensures they’ve completed professional training and continuing education.
Other signs of a high standard:
Membership in AMTA, ABMP, NCBTMB, or other professional organization.
Specialized training for conditions like pregnancy, cancer, or chronic pain.
If you’re in a state without licensing, ask about their school and credentials.
3. 💆♀️ Modalities That Match Your Needs
There’s a big difference between a relaxing Swedish massage and targeted Deep Tissue work—or between energy-focused Thai massage and Lymphatic Drainage.
Not sure which type is right for you? Ask questions like:
“Can you help with tension headaches?”
“Do you have experience with post-surgery recovery?”
“I just need to relax—is Swedish right for me?”
A skilled therapist will either say yes—or refer you to someone who can help.
4. 🕯️ Atmosphere & Comfort
Massage isn’t just about technique. The space matters too.
Do you feel calm, safe, and at ease when you walk in?
Is the room warm and clean?
Do they use extras like aromatherapy or heated tables?
Your nervous system will respond to your environment—so if the vibe isn’t right, the session won’t be as effective.
5. 📍 Location & Availability
Sometimes, it just comes down to convenience.
Are there available appointment times that work with your schedule?
Is the clinic near your home or work?
The best therapist in the world won’t help you if you can’t get in to see them.
Bonus Tip: Go With Your Gut
Sometimes, choosing a therapist is like dating. You might need to try a few before you find the one who really gets you.
Pay attention to how you feel during and after a session. If you leave feeling better, heard, and supported—that’s a win.
